This is according to the figures posted by Box Office Mojo for the period March 16–20, 2011. The comedy film has surpassed the 3rd week gross of ‘My Valentine Girls’ from GMA and REGAL Films with a 3rd week earnings of P44.26 M. Circus Showmanship 101: Timeless Advice

"Don't over look the big 'if'. There is little doubt that shows will do an excellent business if they have real entertainment to offer, present it in a showmanlike manner, give the shows the proper exploitation, and keep faith with the public. Unless they are prepared to do those things, they might as well stay in the barn. It will save 'em money."

No wonder it was described “the most brilliant movie at the 10th Osian Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema” in New Delhi, India. The movie tells of Ryan a documentarian who visits Cebu to shoot the Sinulog Festival. There he meets politician Lito Calisto who commissions him to expose his own corruptive ways in front of the camera. Confessional won the Best Digital Movie in the 2008 Star Awards for Movies. This is the terrifying problem of a young girl in the winning Yanggaw. It won six major nominations in the PMPC Star Awards for Movies. Aside from its numerous nominations, it also won endless acclaim from critics. Directed by Richard Somes, this horror-drama won several major awards at the Gawad Urian. Rosanna Roces portrays Mama Saleng who upon meeting undercover agent Jessie Beltran in Panay Island proved the witch that she really is. She enjoys murdering and cannibalizing on the flesh of her borders! A quiet but sincere romance this time sweeps the hearts of a single young man and woman in the equally lovely Paano Ko Sasabihin. The much-talked about offering is tje debut movie pairing of Enchong Dee and Erich Gonzales, who portrays two characters who meet and mistaken each other for being deaf-mute. But what will happen when they both find out neither of them is handicapped?! Will the love go sour or reverse to even become sweeter? Written and directed by Richard Soriano Legaspi, Paano Ko Sasabihin is a movie where the sound of language is not needed to show the beauty or love.

“Angel, mas maraming flop kesa kay Marian” Topic is now trending on the web!

It seems not the grand launch of the summer station ID of GMA and ABS-CBN is the most talked about topic today in the web. Instead, the hot showbiz article in the website of “Abante”, specifically in the column section of Mr. Alfie Lorenzo (showbiz columnist).

Angel, mas maraming flop kesa kay Marian” “Maki-party na sa ‘Party Pilipinas’” is the title of the said column. The first part of the column is all about the email by an avid fan of Ms. Marian Rivera namely “Briggs Parysta” who seems alarm about the detractors of her Idol (Marian Rivera) particularly the fans of Angel Locsin for the frequent talking, chatting and stressing about the “Flop Issue” of Marian’s movie “Super Inday” and “Tarot” to conclude for some Angel Locsin's Fans to hailed Marian as "Flop Queen" in some social networking sites and in the entertainment website, starmometer.

The fiery disclosure of this avid fan of Marian was immediately spread in the world wide net particularly in the fan sites of angel locsin and continues to broad in the world of internet.

Here’s the full e-mail by Briggs Parysta courtesy of Abante and Mr. Alfie Lorenzo.

Si Marian naka-2 movies na nag-grossed more than 100M, ang BFGF at You To Me…

At tinapos kaagad ang Only You kasi parating at papalipad  na that time ang Darna ni Marian.

Thank you po.

‘Captain Barbell’ makes a fantastic comeback on GMA Telebabad

Nearly five years after its original television debut, Captain Barbell takes flight once more as GMA-7 launches the exciting new sequel to the action-adventure series this March 28.

The story promises to be more exciting, and the visual effects more amazing, as the greatest Pinoy superhero returns with a new league of extraordinary beings with astounding superpowers.

Richard Gutierrez reinterprets his role as the superhero Captain Barbell, and his alter ego, Teng. While Richard has immensely grown as an actor, so did Captain Barbell, who is now set to take on a greater mantle of protecting good from evil, still bearing of course, his iconic red cape.

The story picks up where it left off from the first series with Teng and his besotted Leah (Rhian Ramos) settling down in the city. But their simple life takes a dark turn when Leah is killed and becomes a heart donor to an undisclosed recipient.

In the spirit of true heroism, Captain Barbell fights through his sorrow and continues his quest for peace and order. He meets his strongest opponent in Nero (Christopher de Leon), an evil genius, who became rich through his malevolent ways. Teng, on the other hand, clashes with Gregor (TJ Trinidad), whose father owns the tenement where Teng lives.

Meanwhile, during a freak storm formed by Nero, Captain Barbell helps a woman give birth in the tenement. This woman soon dies thus leaving Teng with the responsibility of taking care of the child, whom Teng names Leah or Lelay (Jillian Ward). At the same time, a strong lightning strikes Teng’s barbell, which in turn spreads unique superpowers among some of the tenants.

Years later, these tenants begin to discover their newfound gifts with some of them choosing to harness their superpowers for good, others for evil. One of them is Gregor, who has grown more jealous and hateful towards Teng. Gregor teams up with Nero, and along with the other supervillains, declares war against Captain Barbell.

On the other hand, General Armando (Eddie Gutierrez), a rich philanthropist, joins forces with Captain Barbell, and urges him to pool together the new league of superheroes.

As Captain Barbell/Teng braves the dark forces, he will also struggle with matters of the heart as he tries to uncover whom between his kind next-door neighbor Melanie (Isabel Oli) and Lelay’s school teacher Althea (Lovi Poe) received Leah’s heart. He will also cross paths with two other ladies who will likewise play important roles in his life, his arrogant boss Anita (Michelle Madrigal) and the avid news reporter Jana (Solenn Heusaff).

With his extraordinary strength, unmatched fighting skills and nearly invincible armor, can Captain Barbell together with the ‘Liga ng Kalayaan’ successfully take down the supervillains, and defend his name as the ultimate protector of peace? How will he uncover the identity of Leah’s myst erious recipient? Which superheroes will form the ‘Liga ng Kalayaan’ and who will side with the evil Nero?

Four lovely and capable actresses, Isabel Oli, Lovi Poe, Michelle Madrigal and Solenn Heusaff add color to Teng/Captain Barbell’s life, while lovable child wonder Jillian Ward stars as the superhero’s sidekick/pseudo-adopted daughter. Rhian Ramos reprises her role as Leah in the pilot week of the show.

Led by veteran actor and Richard’s real life father Eddie Gutierrez, the Liga ng Kalayaan are Bianca King as Lary, General Armando’s fearless assistant; Mike Tan as Teban, a former thief-turned-ally of Captain Barbell; Jake Vargas as Alden, a young superhero who has a top as his weapon of choice; Bea Binene as Misha, another young superhero who wields power with her sword; and Frencheska Farr as Celina, the superheroine with a sonic voice.

On the other side, multi-award-winning actor Christopher de Leon heads the supervillains as Nero. Joining him are TJ Trinidad as Gregor, Teng/Captain Barbell’s fiercest enemy next to Nero; Paolo Paraiso as Rodel, the sandman; Akihiro Sato as Bruno, the hulkman; Elvis Gutierrez as Gaston, a superhero with the ability to create weapons using only his mind; Ervic Vijandre as Ricky, the flash; Sam Pinto as Sammy, the age-shifting supervillain; Ellen Adarna as Kat, the undecided sexy superhero; and Jon Hall as Rob, Anita’s egotistic business partner.

Completing the star-studded cast are Marky Lopez as Hekki, Jana’s assistant; and Ces Quesada as Tiya Lita, Lelay’s manipulative aunt.

This modern interpretation of the Mars Ravelo classic takes it a notch higher as it utilizes cutting edge 3D technology and computer-generated images or CGI in retelling the legendary story. Story-wise, 2011’s Captain Barbell promises to be more dramatic, action-packed and fast-paced than ever before.

The production design is by Australian production designer Peter Collias, who also designed the sets of international blockbusters “The Matrix” and “Moulin Rouge”, together with his Filipino counterpart Digo Ricio. The costumes are manufactured by Hong Kong based-costume maker Emily Lai of Cubedecor, while the script is written by senior creative consultant RJ Nuevas under the creative guidance of Jun Lana. Singing the theme song “Sandata” is the Pinoy rock band Shamrock.

Ace director Dominic Zapata, who has helmed top-rating fantaseryes such as Mulawin, Darna, and the first Captain Barbell, will direct this Captain Barbell sequel.

Witness the soaring and much-awaited comeback of Captain Barbell on March 28 after 24 Oras on GMA Telebabad.

Captain Barbell also premieres worldwide on March 30 on GMA Pinoy TV.

My Sister Loved the Shrine Bears; Frisco Loved Burck's Tigers; John Pugh Loves Never Selling Cole Bros. Circus ...

A pithy potpourri, plentifully positive, properly plumped for popcorn people, prefaced by this glee-mail from my sister Kathy, in Omaha:

"Hi David,

I went to the Shrine Circus today, and I saw the MOST CHARMING BEARS I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY WHOLE LIFE!!!! THEY WERE ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!!! I also saw a fella that worked with ropes and whips (I never would have thought I would have liked that in a circus........but he was a FABULOUS ENTERTAINER! And a high trapeze artist by the name of Rebecca, who was fabulous! I loved seeing these acts, but was somewhat disappointed by some other things. However, it was wonderful attending the circus again......and I am a "kid of all ages".

Can you name the circus? I'm still awaiting a name and place from Kathy.

And here, from the San Francisco Chronicle dated August 23, 1984, discovered whilst purging my papers to de-clutter and hone, bone down to durable dust, and admit fresh air into my musty walk-in closet, is rare praise for the our own ...

"On the other hand, Wade Burck, a fresh-faced tiger trainer from North Dakota, at least displays genuine affection for the beasts with which he shares his working hours. Burck's six Siberian tigers and nine Burmese white tigers are gorgeous, beautifully groomed, and evidently happier with their lot than those pitiful camels. Ditto the performing bears -- despite the foolish tutus and wrestler's togs they've been made to wear."

Oh, but patron Kathy might have adored the bruins in high fashion. High honor, anyway, from Frisco, a town not afraid to turn out real circus reviews! Wade evidently still values the beauty of beautiful animals; take a look at his blog, (the link, his name, to your right) and behold some of the most gorgeous photos you will see of life's living menagerie.

Covinton Connected, Cirque du Soleil is advance puffing record-breaking profits for the year 2011 exceeding (cry your hearts out, Hugo) $1 billion bucks. Revenues last year reached $850 million. Now wait, 2011? Isn't that the year we just entered?

What troubles me about such puffery: Claims second in commander, Daniel Lamarre, " so far, no show has ever recorded a loss." No, no, please Mr. Lamarre, are you telling me that your Banana Shpeel actually made money? I think not. The Beatles Vegas show, says he, "has continued ... to pack in audiences at a 2,000 seat theatre>" I'mmmmmm not so sure, sir. On the PBS Cirque give-away special, I thought I saw an ominous number of empty chairs, no? Now, here's the caveat kicker: The rosy "forecast" -- that's what it really is -- "relies on the success of three new spectacles," including the Hollywood installation at the Kodak Theatre and a stage spectacle at Radio City Musical Hall -- oops, that's New York, not exactly a guaranteed venue for any Cirque offering. Maybe they've learned their lesson and can magically avoid another banana bust.

OK, let it go, to myself I puff. Here's tenuous tanbark talk: Rumorhazzit (I miss Billy Barton when I spell it that way, his way) that John Pugh pitched his Cole Bros Circus to the Byrd family, but they were not buying. Rumors forever. How many centuries now have I been hearing that Johnny wants to get out from under the big top just as soon as he can find a buyer? Strange, he keeps on owning it AND having it up for sale. Maybe he's desperate to raise the $150,000 court fine he has to pachyderm up for his murky elephant sale to a Davenport named Gopher.

Kathy, I'm dying to know of those things at Shrine that left you wanting? Did you know that somewhere in China, a Panda bear performs! Those creatures are so absolutely adorable. How I would love to hug one, if only it would promise not to hug me back. Unrequited love sometimes is the only option, even with a pre-nuptial.

Circus Scramble: Pee Wee's Boffo Big Top ... S.F. Student Masters "Static Trapeze" ... Kelly-Miller in the Mud Again ... 46 Acts in 45 Minutes!

A Circus invades farmer Pee Wee's barnyard, and that's the inspired premise of one of the best circus movies I've ever seen, Big Top Pee Wee. And what a glorious delight after, the night before, slogging through one of the dumbest, most retarded "circus" flicks of all time, a slow-as-a-snail workout from France called Around a Small Mountain. The Pee Wee version of circus is ingeniously inventive, amusing, magical. And what a High Payoff ending -- the most gloriously festive parade full of folksy color and animation set to a rousingly right tune, and then a procession of four legged stars following Pee Wee across the high wire ... ' Tis a Sarasota shame that Paul Reubens, the creator of Pee Wee, allowed himself so reckless a personal encounter in that tacky movie house; it set his career back by years. Anyway, I'm glad Reubens is back, maybe on Broadway, or in a show with "Broadway" in the title about to air on HBO. If you haven't seen his movie AND if you believe in old-fashioned circus, see it now! ...

Daring Young Man on a Dead Trapeze: Sounds dead to me, but, of course, the time being the ballet-precious present, and the venue being once-again beleaguered San Francisco Circus Center-School-Post Pickles Circus Residue, etc., etc., the choreography on the "static trapeze," as it is officially called, might have a certain Balanchine bounce. Aerialist Dude is 28-year-old Grey Lux, and he is quoted in a story about money problems at the S.F. Center, talking up the quality of instruction he is getting at the school -- about $35 per class -- touting its alumni as among "some of the greatest performers in the circus world." An astonishing claim; I'd love to see some of these stars some day, somewhere. They are surely not showing up on any of the shows that come my way. And why in the world not, I wonder, considering, per claims, that the Circus School currently has 50 teachers and 500 students! ... Read on ...

They once called it The Pickle Family Circus: About the S.F. Center itself, reducing the intricacies of insolvency and reorganization down to whatever they have left in the cookie jar, which periodically gets looted by self-serving hot shots apparently making hay off of hefty student tuition fees, well, they have peanuts left to sell. And now they have yet another new board of directors and another new executive director, Ayla Agarwal. She was once herself a student of the school. Says she, to her provisional credit, she has "no intention of taking a salary." Behold the strange twisted legacy of the once vibrant Pickle Family Circus. Might this be what faces the Big Apple Circus of tomorrow?

On a recent lot, the view from Steve Copeland's door

Mud, Glorious Mud! Yes, that would be the course by default into which Kelly-Miller Circus recently slipped (it had to happen, per cosmic script) . The lot in Navasota, TX, was well watered, up to a couple of inches around the track, credit the elephants breaking a water pipe. Mother Nature is not always to blame. How do I know all this stuff? I am following Steve Copeland's deliciously detailed blog. Perhaps John Ringling North II and his wife Shirley, departing back to Ireland, got out just in time. Show appears to have prospered in its early Texas dates, these I assume promoted by front ender Jim Judkins. Lately, sans the Judkins touch, biz appears to have slumped and sputtered a bit. An ailing seat wagon is still MIA. On the soggy Navasoa lot, the ring side seats remained empty. Said Steve, "It was weird having to perform to people so far away from us." Why can't I take my eyes off of Kelly Miller? Blame the Ringling in my blood, compelling me to tag and peep along, the voyeur I am. My big question of the moment: Can a show that is virtually the same one as last season deliver? Stay tuned.

Members of the four-person CIRCA troupe

Fastest Show on Earth: From the land down under comes a troupe of four, recently reviewed at the Byham theatre in the land where Ringling under canvas went down under in '56 (Pittsburgh). These hurricane ring wizards execute 46 circus acts in 45 minutes. Wow, what pacing! What brevity! But wait, does that also include a peanut pitch??? They call themselves CIRCA. In total, the group consists of 14 performers who are dispersed into various shows around the world. Go, you Aussies! On the stage is placed a large clock, itself a big feature of the show, for audiences cheer the artists on as their minutes wind down to a precious few. "We are always trying to beat the clock, sometimes it comes down to a whisker," said the company's associate director Ben Kampton. Ringling's late late equestrian director, Fred Bradna, who demanded strict adherence to Swiss clock discipline, must be tick tick ticking with glee in his grave. “Snap is the greatest essential in American circuses,” said the pacemaster. “There must be no waits, no breaks.” Anybody out there listening?

The crazy tandem of Ali Sotto and radio disc jock Papa Jack add on the milk in Star Box, a daily talk show to be staged live not in studio glitz but in remote areas to engage the common-tao; while Jackie Rice dips in some pinipig in  Sisid, with leading men Dominic Roco, Ian Batherson and JC Tiuseco. In her first afternoon drama starrer, Jackie learns the depth of showbiz stardom thru diving as the beautiful Hiyas in one island country.
Meanwhile, Mark Herras, Kris Bernal and Rocco Nacino whip up their one-of-a-kind dance moves for television's most-awaited Danserye with the working title Jump, as Carmina Villarroel takes on the kitchen heat with kiddie chefs in Amazing Cooking Kids, a reality cooking competition open to kids from eight to 12 years old.
Carmina will also star in a heart-warming primetime drama initially titled Munting Heredera with the original queen of Philippine movies Ms. Gloria Romero.
Topping it all, Marian Rivera makes the perfect appetizer with her new horror-comedy flick Spooky Nights Presents Bampirella, the first of Spooky Nights presentations to run for four weeks. Bampirella tells of a vampire tale tweaked with love and curse.
Marian also topbills GMA-7's most expensive primetime series Amaya, which tells of the country's untold epics. She is joined by leading men Sid Lucero and television's newest 'it' guy Mikael Daez.
The campaign was conceptualized by the creative team of GMA's Program Support Department composed of Vice President Regie Bautista, Associate Creative Director Dino Garcia, Copywriter Sudoy Patena, Art Director Hendrick Gonzales, and Senior Project Manager Hasmin Marable, and was produced by a team composed of multi-awarded cinematographer Ding Achacoso as director of photography, Director Paul Ticzon, Co-Director Vince Gealogo, Producer Ingrid Navarro and cameramen Erwin Tolentino, Ricky Paras, Paolo Visda, Javier Delgado and Paul Arrojado.
GMA Network once again completes the summer fun with a truly all-in-one "viewers' delight." As the ID's jingle, sung by Julie Ann San Jose and Elmo Magalona, says: "Anumang saya ang hanap mo, matatagpuan mo rito."

‘Mula sa Puso’ Remake Premieres this Monday on ABS-CBN

The soap opera that gripped the nation in the late '90s returns on Philippine television as ABS-CBN revives Mula sa Puso with a powerhouse cast beginning Monday, March 28, at 6:00 PM as a new addition to its unbeatable Primetime Bida block.

Filipinos will relive the teleserye launched 14 years ago that gave birth to some of the most unforgettable Philippine soap opera characters such as Magda (Dawn Zulueta), Fernando (Ariel Rivera), Selina (Eula Valdes), Gabriel (JM De Guzman), Michael (Enrique Gil), and Via (Lauren Young).

Life will change for Olivia Pereira, the only daughter of Don Fernando Pereira, on her 18th birthday. Aside from learning that her dad promised her hand in marriage to her childhood friend Michael, she will also be abducted by armed men ordered by her very own aunt Selina.

She will be saved by Gabriel, a simple guy and a taxi driver whom she will later fall in love with. Little did she know that she is close to discovering pieces of her past and of her identity as Gabriel's foster mom Magda turns out to be her biological mother.

In this remake of Mula sa Puso under the helm of its original director Wenn V. Deramas, viewers will get to know the characters even more as the series further dissect every character and their stories like Fernando and Magda's past relationship.

The whole cast has been preparing for their roles and they leaving no stones unturned in reviving the colorful and famous characters of the series.

I watched the movie just to get a sense and feel of it, but I still want my portrayal to be fresh and different. I don't want it to be a carbon copy," said Lauren, who will reprise the role of Via first played by Claudine Barretto.

You will definitely see a different Enrique here. Very different from the characters you usually see me play," said Enrique, who will play the role that Diether Ocampo portrayed.

We are really giving our best so that we can at least be at par with what the first Mula sa Puso gave the viewers," said JM, who will play Gabriel, a role that marked the career of late actor Rico Yan.

The series also marks the return of Dawn Zulueta, Eula Valdes, and Ariel Rivera on ABS-CBN.
I feel at home again.  I'm excited to work with old friends and colleagues again.  I trust Direk Wenn.  He will surely guide me on how to reprise the role of Selina," said Eula.

My last teleserye in ABS-CBN was Lastikman. Then I got pregnant and gave birth.  I am now back and I am honored that ABS-CBN chose me for the role of Magda," said Dawn.

This is an emotional comeback for me," says Ariel, who was part of the original series and will take on a bigger role this time.  "I am excited to be part of Mula sa Puso, which was a record-breaking soap."

Don't miss the premiere of Mula sa Puso this Monday, March 28, at 6:00 PM on ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida.

Spider-tacular Peril Revives Old Circus with a Terrifying New Twist: When Will Danger's Destination Be THE AUDIENCE?

Carpio, another injured Spider-Man actress, will be out of the show for 2-3 weeks. She had replaced Natali Mendoza, who suffered a more serious injury and left the production.

Time to brush off our contemptible Circus Maximus memories and give due, if perverse, respect to those bloody Roman "games" that drew spectators by the hundreds of thousands.

Their spirit of risk-taking seems to have resurfaced, of all places, in a "legit" Broadway house named the Foxwoods Theatre, credit the musical endlessly in previews that just keeps on hurting, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.

Only last week, but not until yesterday made belatedly known, yet another actress, Carpio, got tangled up in the show's precarious cobwebs and ended up in the hospital with minor injuries. Carpio, who had replaced Natali Mendoza, an earlier victim of a more serious fall, will be out of the show for two weeks. The unscripted landings continue apace.

Crowds of uncertain origin -- possibly sharing the same thrill-seeking mania that drew the multitudes to the Roman Coliseum where Christians got fed to the lions -- are flocking to the Foxwoods Theatre in New York, nightly nearly packing the playhouse to witness actors flying out over the audience destined for balcony landings and return flights.

Most of the time, the marionette thespians make it. Sometimes they don't, causing gasps, groans and grief-stricken faces from startled ticket holders, setting off alarms, throwing scenery aside to make room for medics with stretchers, driving headline-writers into fits of melodrama over the latest misfortune to befall a show with a reputation for its reckless technical reach.

Hard to imaging this critically panned "musical" thriving without all of the above. The long lines still forming at the ticket windows, despite the hissing notices, are there, forget about a leaden second act and some worn out rock and roll songs, to see the "circus" in Spider-Man. To even watch -- well, let's not go there.

Once upon a more dangerous season, many of these same customers flocked to our pre-Cirque circuses on the wings of similarly trepidations expectations. Most of them feared the worst, and rarely did the worst every happen. But the ever-present "worst" gave the big top a certain raw urgency that it has grown to doubt and downplay. Terminate or emasculate your "thrill acts," and somewhere, somehow, they will find a way back into another or newer form.

But live action theatre at the Foxwoods introduces a new, even more perilous element into an old-fashioned format: the very real possibility that YOU, not a performer but a patron, might also end up on a stretcher. That is, if you happen to be sitting in the wrong seat when the unthinkable occurs. At a circus, rarely if ever has this eerie option been present. Yes, of course, if a trapeze artist on the dismount bounces out of a net, theoretically he or she could land in the unwelcome lap of a customer. At the Fox woods, that possibility lurks at every performance. And this factor alone makes astonishing the continued indifference of New York city over the dangers inherent in this problem-plagued production. One might ask, is theatre such a big industry in Gotham, and Spider-Man, such a draw, that without the latter, all theatres would suffer?

And while Spider-Man continues to draw the multitudes, most of our circuses, having either learned to downplay the element of risk or immunize themselves totally against it by using safety lifelines (mechanics), are becoming, it might be prudently argued, less exciting, and thus less appealing an option to the average American amusement seeker.

Nouveau circus types dismiss "danger" as the mark of a barbaric art form. They are in essence reinventing the form to liberate it from itself. They have every right to succeed on their own terms -- if they can. But "static trapeze," a new device granting the "aerialist" artistic license to stress choreography over daredevilry, is unlikely to advance the circus as a wide-spread populist draw. It may, on the other hand, reinvent and re-energize ballet.

And in the meantime, thrill acts of all sort will continue to flourish, whatever the form.

My advice to all Spider-Man voyeurs: Unless you desire yourself to be fed to the flying lions, so to speak, in a modern form of accidental victim-hood, get thee to a balcony seat in the Gods far away from this ill-rigged ethereal extravaganza, either that wear a hard hat before reporting to your orchestra seat, be prepared to duck and cover without advance notice, and pray for a safe journey out of the modern-day version of old Rome, while it lasts, on that brave new Great White Way.
