CNN Hero of the Year is Fil-Am Robin Lim
CNN named Robin Lim, a 54-year-old Filipino-American midwife in Indonesia, as this year's Hero of the Year awardee.
Lim, who was born to an American soldier father and Filipino-Chinese mother, is the second Pinoy recipient of such recognition for helping poor women have healthy pregnancies and births in Indonesia. In 2009, Efren Peñaflorida became the first Pinoy CNN Hero of the Year for his Kariton classroom project that aims to educate street children.
Lim received her CNN Hero of the Year 2011 award from Anderson Cooper last Sunday in a ceremony attended by Jerry Seinfeld, Sofia Vergara, will.i.am., Miley Cyrus and Kid Rock at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
"Today on our Earth, 981 mothers in the prime of their life will die - and tomorrow again and yesterday. And I'm asking you to help change that. We don't even know how many babies are lost, but all of us can help change that," Lim said as she accepted the honor.
Being the 2011 Hero of the Year, Lim received a cash prize of $50,000 and an additional $250,000 grant for her nonprofit Bumi Sehat Foundation.
CNN Heroes is a multi-platform campaign that "shines a spotlight on individuals who go to extraordinary lengths to serve others." This year, the campaign reportedly received over 10,000 submissions from more than 100 countries.
