'Amaya' and 'Philippine Treasures' Recognized for Showcasing Philippine Jewelry Heritage

GMA's top-rating epicserye Amaya and the Public Affairs documentary special Philippine Treasures were recognized recently by the Meycauayan Jewelry Industry Association, Inc., an organization composed of 135 jewellers in Meycauayan, Bulacan, for the promotion of the country's rich jewelry-making heritage.

Top-billed by Marian Rivera, Amaya, is an epic series set in the pre-colonial era of Philippine History. Apart from Filipino customs and traditions, the series also features native Filipino costumes and jewelries patterned after the popular designs of the era. Most of the jewelries used in the series were crafted by jewellers from Meycauayan, Bulacan.

Philippine Treasures, on the other hand, is a documentary special that showcased the Philippines' rich historical and cultural heritage, particularly the country's priceless artifacts.

"Recognitions like this inspire us to make our programs not only more appealing to our audience but also more educational while at the same time entertaining," said Senior Program Manager Cheryl Ching-Sy, who received the plaque for Amaya. "We are thankful to the Meycauayan Jewelry Industry Association for making us the first entertainment program to be awarded by their organization," she added.

Philippine Treasures host Mel Tiangco received the recognition on behalf of the program.

"Isa sa mga mithiin ng programang Philippine Treasures ang palaganapin ang appreciation ng sambayanan sa mga yaman ng ating bansa," Tiangco said.

Philippine Treasures aired on September 11 on GMA's Sunday Night Box Office (SNBO), while Amaya airs weeknights after 24 Oras. Due to its successful run, the epicserye was extended until January 2012.

Anonymous America: All That Freedom, So Little Courage

How ironic that in this insanely liberated, some would claim "exceptional" land of the free, a land whose press kit penned by Mr. Jefferson screams out "freedom of speech!!!", so many practicing Americans are so afraid to attach their names to what they have to say.

There was a time, when my Grandma wrote letters to New York papers, when you had to give your name and telephone number, had to be vetted. When those who had something to say were proud to be identified with what they had to say. When the discourse, as a result, was more civil and less hateful. God bless the internet? Perhaps nothing has influenced my life so much as how my grandmother ended one of her published letters, a copy of which she proudly sent to us in California: "Live and let live," she wrote before signing her name. At the age of around ten, I was mighty impressed with her open and tolerant mind. Impressed that the lady who wrote those words was my grandmother.

Whenever I see Anonymous on any blog, not just one of the circus blogs, I see a sad nameless coward. Perhaps I should be kind and consider the voice that of a nameless victim of free-speech backlash, violent in words or assault. But when I see another Little A spewing forth anger or hate, sarcasm or stupidity, I see just that, a great big Little A.

Oh, of course, I could take into account, given the incestuous little circus world in which this blog operates, that there are the professionals out there hiding behind my tent rather than taking to their own platforms, possibly trying to get even with a show or manager who fired them or refused to hire them. I can almost sometimes feel sparks of animosity flying back and forth between ring rivals. I am not totally naive.

Or they-you, yes you, might be shills flaking for one circus, or dissing another, feebly advancing your hidden agendas. I have inside information from past experience to know that I am not imaging things. Sometimes the slant in the comments is so blatant as to make me laugh.

And now, Anonymous is lining up, calling himself one day, P.T. Barnum, another day Joe Blow, and the next, well I won't name that one. Still unwilling to attach his/her name to his words. Telling me that all anybody has to do is fake a name. Well maybe, but maybe not. Too bad, because sometimes he/she has excellent points to make. But I don't care. I'm going to stand behind those who do attach their names. P.T., back to your grave, please! See if you can send up here, say Al Ringling or William Coup, Irving J. Polack or John Strong. Any of them know far more about circus than you ever did.

Somebody a while back asked me in a terse edgy comment, "Who the hell do you think you are?" Kindly, I did not turn the question on him.

Whoever the hell I am, you have my name. You have my bio. Whatever I am, I am not Anonymous.

Al Ringling, are you there yet ... Al?

Why Rihanna cancelled a concert in Sweden?

Rihanna has canceled a concert in Sweden tonight after being rushed to the hospital. The singer had been scheduled to perform in Malmö, but a representative for Live Nation said that she is "not in condition to conduct the concert" in a statement.

Earlier this afternoon, Rihanna tweeted an apology accompanied by a photograph of her arm with an I.V. tube. The nature of the singer's medical emergency is unclear, but in a tweet she wrote that playing the show "would have been a great time" and "so much better than being sick with the flu."

What Lady Gaga's father did recently?

http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lrpju45tOH1qkh0dd.gifhttp://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_llgphwZBY81qafrh6.gifLady GaGa's Dad is opening a restaurant named in honour of his late sister Joanne.

GaGas and her parents became shareholders in Manhattan's Vince & Eddie's last year, but the Italian-American eatery has since closed down. Whateves, it was all for the better cause now, GaGa's dad has now taken over the property and is set to reopen the venue under the new name of Joanne - a nod to his sister, who died of auto-immune disorder Lupus at the age of 19. Aw.

Sure, we'd would have liked a GaGa themed eatery, but we have no complaints about something this sweet and sentimental!

GaGa's aunt died years before she was even born, but the pop superstar has previously revealed she wears a special necklace in her memory. She said,

"My dad's sister Joanne died when she was 19. I wear a birth certificate of hers around my neck... I just feel very close to her. I actually pray to her (before every concert)... She died so young and she didn't get to live out the rest of her life, so I'm living it out for her."

Joe Germanotta is planning to launch the diner during America's Thanksgiving holiday next month with head chef Art Smith.
