The Morning Midway: The Power of Humanity to Care ... Miraculous Rescue in Haiti Caught on Television

"She's there! She's alive!" shouts Raija in Haiti, after six days standing by the ruins of where his wife Jeannette worked, refusing all the while to give up. Believing all the while that she was still among the living.

From out of the ruins, still trapped within, a voice that Raija has prayed for six days to hear cries out, "Even if I die, I love you so much. Don't forget!"

So close to salvation, and yet so far, with no rescuers and equipment nearby to try freeing Jeannette. The greatest worry now was that an aftershock could cause the precarious ruins to sandwich into each other.

The world was everywhere around, trying its best to help. And, just then, like a miracle, helped arrived --fire fighters from Los Angeles, and television reporters were calling it out as it happened:

"They get her water and then begin cutting into the cables and things around her."

A camera inserted through a slim opening shows the wife's hand pinned under a beam. "Free it, and she's free."

Three hours after an elated Raija first heard his wife's voice, she is pulled out from under the crumbled remains of a building precariously close to caving in on her.

"Thank God,!" she says, and then she sings ...

"Don't be afraid of death."

"For her husband, it's a miracle." For me the viewer, a miraculous rescue that I wept through watching.

The dignity of human life respected. The selfless answer of humanity to reach out and help, to search for and rescue, to console and to mend, to give and to comfort. Here in a world too often torn asunder and blown to pieces not by earthquakes but by the unrelenting violence of mankind itself, yesterday its better side rose to the occasion. A terrible paradox played out as it has many times before: Yesterday I witnessed a heart-wrenching scene reconnecting two people on a cold and brutal, but sometimes majestically compassionate planet. Something I will never forget.
